Mary Poppins Returns

Everyone who knows me will know how much I love love love Mary Poppins and how important it is to me. It reminds me of my Grandma - we used to watch it every time I slept at her house when I was little and eat hot cross buns together.

When I heard they were making a new one, I was against it. To me, you don’t mess with a classic - or Julie Andrews.

I didn’t really look in to it much before I went to see it with my Mum. I knew the basic storyline was Mary was coming back to look after the Banks children again - and that doesn’t just mean the kiddies. For some reason I also got it in to my head that Lin-Manuel was replacing Dick Van Dyke as Bert which seemed like madness to me. I was happy when I found out he wasn’t, he was actually playing a whole new character Jack.

I have very mixed feelings about the film. Some bits I liked, but also some I didn’t.

I loved all the little hints to the original like the "vote for women" sash, dancing penguins, the Admiral, and the pigeon snow globe. Those where the bits that made it for me. I wished there was more, and they definitely missed some opportunity’s to do some. In the bank scene I was waiting for some to say, " prudently fruitfully, frugally invested in the bank". There was a point where I thought it was going to happen and I was on the edge of my seat waiting and thennnn it didn’t.

I liked all the actors they used too, just because I didn’t expect them to all turn up. Meryl Streep as Topsy is great. Colin Firth was a hot baddy and we had Julie Walters playing an older Ellen the maid. I thought that was a nice just because she was a character in the first one. And we wouldn’t be able to go anywhere without mentioning Dick Van Dyke turning up as the owner of the bank doing a little dance on top of a desk.

Emily Blunt was okay as Mary Poppins. She was as sassy as ever, but why did she keep checking herself out in anything shiny? Julie Andrews did it once and we should have all left it there and moved on.

There seemed to be a lot more songs than the original and some of them felt a bit forced like we could have got where we needed to be with some dialogue. The Trip a Little Light Fantastic dance routine was also no Step in Time. My favourite song was A Cover is Not the Book, half because I always prefer upbeat songs and half because Emily Blunt looked like Catherine Zeta Jones in Chicago in that wig.

The biggest thing that annoyed me was when Emily Blunt made the big this is it the float out of the sky entrance and she wasn’t even using her umbrella - she was on a kite! I just really thing she needed to use the umbrella like Julie Andrews did.

I did enjoy it, I think it’s coming off as though I didn’t. However, I will still be recommending the original over this one and I won’t be dressing up as the Emily Blunt Poppins for Halloween.

  1. I haven't seen this yet, but think I will have to check it out! I've seen the behind the scenes of the bathtub scene (where she disappears into the bubble bath) and thought it looked pretty good!
